What is Non-Union & Malunion?

Non-union occurs when a broken bone fails to heal within a normal timeframe. Malunion occurs when a bone heals in an incorrect position (bent, rotated, or shortened). Both conditions disrupt joint biomechanics, cause chronic pain, and limit limb function.

Who Needs Treatment?

Patients with persistent leg or arm pain months after a fracture, those with visible limb deformities following healing, or cases complicated by bone loss or previous implant failures.

Common Indicators & Symptoms

  • Persistent pain at the fracture site during movement
  • Inability to bear weight on the affected limb
  • Visible deformity or limb shortening
  • Instability or clicking sensations in the bone

Mechanical & Biological Assessment

We perform detailed CT scans and dynamic stress X-rays to assess stability, combined with laboratory tests (vitamin D, calcium, thyroid panel, inflammatory markers) to identify any biological factors contributing to the non-union.

Treatment Options

Reconstruction options depend on the type of non-union: 1. Hypertrophic non-union: Requires rigid stabilization using strong plates or intramedullary nails. 2. Atrophic non-union: Requires biological stimulation (bone grafting) combined with stable fixation. 3. Bone transport: For cases with significant bone loss, distraction osteogenesis is used to grow new bone across the gap.

Biological bone transport frames, internal locking nails, and structural autologous bone grafts.

Recovery & Post-Operative Care

Rehabilitation is customized to the patient's recovery phase. We encourage early weight-bearing and movement to stimulate bone healing and prevent joint stiffness.
